The old town is built around the\u00a0<strong>Venetian harbor<\/strong>\u00a0and surrounded by\u00a0<strong>Venetian fortifications<\/strong>\u00a0built in 1538 and today\u00a0<strong>rescued only the east and west parts<\/strong>. The southern parts of the walls were destroyed in the early 20th century, to use their materials in the construction of the\u00a0<strong>Central Market<\/strong>\u00a0and various other public buildings. Travelers can see in various parts of the city samples of cultures that passed and left their mark.<\/p>\n<p data-wahfont=\"16\">The main attractions of the old city are:<\/p>\n\n<ul>\n \t<li><strong>Venetian harbor<\/strong>\u00a0and the\u00a0<strong>lighthouse<\/strong>\u00a0which is one of the oldest lighthouses still preserved<\/li>\n \t<li><strong>Yali Tzamisi<\/strong>\u00a0was old mosque and now has been restored and serves as event area.<\/li>\n \t<li>The\u00a0<strong>Great Arsenal\u00a0<\/strong>formerly housed the town hall of Chania, while today houses the\u00a0<strong>Centre of Mediterranean Architecture<\/strong>. Next to the Great Arsenal are the\u00a0<strong>Venetian dockyards<\/strong>\u00a0where were manufactured warships and now still working to repair ships and boats.<\/li>\n \t<li><strong>Splantzia Square<\/strong>\u00a0and the\u00a0<strong>Church of St. Nicholas<\/strong>. The square was the old quarter of the Muslims, with narrow streets and during the Turkish occupation the church of St. Nicholas was the main mosque of Chania.<\/li>\n \t<li><strong>Santirvani<\/strong>\u00a0square with the small fountain, where the main streets of the old city intersect.<\/li>\n \t<li><strong>Chania Cathedral of Panagia Trimartyri<\/strong>\u00a0(Virgin of the Three Martyrs) and its square<\/li>\n \t<li><strong>Etz Hayyim Synagogue<\/strong>, which is the only synagogue in Crete preserved and was restored in 1999.<\/li>\n \t<li><strong>Firka Fortress<\/strong>\u00a0which formerly was the main Venetian barracks of the city due to its key location and today houses the\u00a0<strong>Maritime Museum of Crete<\/strong><\/li>\n \t<li><strong>The Gate of the sand<\/strong>\u00a0(or\u00a0<strong>Sabbionara<\/strong>, or\u00a0<strong>Koum Kapi<\/strong>) is the North East and the only of the three gates of the second (outer) Venetian walls of Chania which is preserved till today.<\/li>\n \t<li><strong>Bastion Mocenigo<\/strong>, located in the sea, next to the Gate of the Sand (Sabbionara), its south side is decorated by an emblem with the lion of St. Mark, a coat of arms and the date 1591.<\/li>\n \t<li><strong>Neorio Moro<\/strong>\u00a0is one of the three shipyards built in the 16th century and today hosts the Sailing Club of Chania.
